What to Expect at Your 3D Ultrasound Appointment: A Real Walk-Through

Your prenatal appointments happen in cold exam rooms with fluorescent lights, paper sheets, and that crinkly sound the table makes when you shift your weight. You know the room. You’ve been there. It’s functional and it’s fine and it’s not where you want to see your baby for the first time.

Your 3D ultrasound at Baby Bear 3D is the opposite of that. Warm lighting. Comfortable furniture. A big screen on the wall so everyone in the room can see without crowding around a tiny monitor. Space for your partner, your mom, your kids if you have them. You’re not here for a medical exam. You’re here to meet your baby. The room should feel like the occasion it actually is.

What Should You Do Before You Arrive for Your Appointment?

Hydrate. Start a day or two before, not just the morning of. Good hydration makes the amniotic fluid clearer, which makes the images clearer. You don’t need a full bladder — that’s for medical ultrasounds. Just don’t be dehydrated.

Eat something about 30 minutes before your session. A small meal or a snack with a little natural sugar; fruit, yogurt, a granola bar. Food gets your baby moving and an active baby is easier to image than a sleeping one. Some moms swear by orange juice. Others say a cold glass of water works just as well. Try what feels right.

Wear something comfortable and two-piece. Easy access to your belly. You’ll be on the bed for 20 to 30 minutes, sometimes longer, so comfort matters. This isn’t the time for a tight dress or complicated layers.

Bring whoever you want in the room. Partner. Your mom. Your older kids if they’re old enough to sit still and be amazed. The room has space. The screen is big enough for everyone to see. This is a family moment and we treat it like one.

What Happens When You First Arrive at Baby Bear 3D?

You’ll check in at the front desk and we’ll walk you back to the ultrasound room. It’s designed to feel like a living room with better technology. You’ll get comfortable on the bed — reclined, not flat — and we’ll explain exactly what’s going to happen before we touch anything.

The gel is warm. We warm it. It’s a small thing but it matters. Cold gel is a medical appointment. Warm gel is a welcome. We’re specific about this because we know how many cold-gel appointments you’ve already had by the time you reach us.

The session lasts 20 to 30 minutes. Sometimes longer if your baby is being uncooperative — and they often are. Babies don’t perform on schedule. If your little one is facing your spine or has their hands covering their face, we’ll try to get them to shift. A change in your position. A cold drink if you haven’t had one. Some gentle movement. A walk around the room. Patience.

What Will You Actually See During the Session?

The face first, if positioning allows. That’s what everyone wants most and we try to get it early while your baby is still cooperating. The nose. The lips. The cheeks. The little chin that’s going to look exactly like your partner’s mom. You’ll see features you recognize from family photos and traits that are entirely new. Some moms cry. Most do, actually. We keep tissues in the room.

Then the hands. Tiny fingers. Sometimes clutching the umbilical cord. Sometimes waving like they know they’re on camera and they’re putting on a show. The detail at 28 to 30 weeks is remarkable — you can count fingers. You can see fingernails. You can watch them reach for things that don’t exist yet.

If you added 4D video you’ll see movement throughout. A yawn that starts small and stretches their whole face. A stretch that arches their back. The little kicks you’ve been feeling for weeks, finally visible on the big screen. The connection between what you feel and what you see is the moment most parents remember longest.

What Do You Take Home After the Appointment?

Depending on your package you’ll leave with printed photos, digital images on a USB drive or sent to your phone, and optionally 4D video clips. The digital files are high resolution. Print them anywhere. Share them however you want. They’re yours.

Most parents walk out of our studio in Brainerd a little overwhelmed and holding a small envelope of images like it’s the most valuable thing they’ve ever carried. It kind of is.

See what’s included in each package. Then book your appointment. We’ll make sure you feel ready.
